Every vehicle on the road is equipped with a parking brake, hand brake, electric brake or emergency brake. Regardless of the name, the parking brake is designed to supplement the main hydraulic braking system and keep the vehicle stationary when it is shut down and parked. It can also be used to slow the vehicle to a stop in an emergency.
An electric brake system is a braking system that uses electricity to stop a vehicle. Unlike hydraulic braking systems, which use fluid to transfer braking force from the pedal to the wheel brakes, electric brake systems use an electric motor to generate the braking force instead.
These systems are commonly used in electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids. In these types of cars, the electric motor is used for both propulsion and braking.
Inspecting the caliper, cables and motors may not give you a complete picture of what is happening with these systems. Having access to a scan tool can reduce diagnostic time usually.
A dedicated brake tool or enhanced scan tool is able to command these protocols and interrogate the module for codes and faults.
In terms of vehicle maintenance and repair, the electric braking system may require different maintenance than the traditional braking system. Furthermore, The electric brake system may require periodic calibration to ensure optimum performance.
