How to Program Nisssan Key Fob: Step-by-Step Guide

As times have progressed, car anti-theft systems have become increasingly sophisticated. Along with this, the form of keys has also gradually changed and upgraded. Keychains have made travel more convenient for everyone. Nissan, a common car brand in the United States, offers keychains with functions such as remote unlocking or engine unlocking.

When you lose your Nissan key fob or simply want to add a working key for your family, you'll need to program your Nissan key fob. Replacing your Nissan key fob can be easily done at home without going to a dealership, but how do you program it using Autel key programmer? What methods are available? Let's take a look.

Types of Nissan Key Fobs

  1. Traditional mechanical key

This is the most basic type of key, and also the earliest form of key, commonly found in lower-spec or older Nissan vehicles. It has no buttons, consisting only of metal key teeth. This type of key does not require key programming, has a relatively low security level, and can be added directly using a key-cutting machine.

  2. Remote key/folding key

This type of key combines a metal component with a remote control, and is a relatively common type of Nissan key. Some models feature a foldable, concealed metal tooth section. Adding this type of key requires programming the remote control; otherwise, the remote control function will be affected.

  3. Smart Key

This is currently the mainstream configuration for mid-to-high-end vehicles, offering keyless entry and push-button start for a more convenient experience. The key design is more refined, resembling a card or a small remote control, and typically does not have an exposed metal key plate (it is hidden inside).

  4. Card-style smart key

This is a special type of smart key, thinner and lighter, making it easier to carry. It resembles a credit card or access card and is very flat.

When You Need to Program a New Key Fob

Your key fob is crucial to your car; without it, you won't be able to enter or start your vehicle. If you lose or damage your key and need a spare, you'll often need to program a new one.

Because of the key fob's unique chip and its ability to control the car, you can program it yourself or use an advanced key programming tool like the Autel key programmer.

Preparation (Before You Start)

  1. Check your vehicle’s compatibility:

There are many different Nissan models. Different car models and different production years correspond to different key fobs, which often involve different programming processes. Some older models may not support key programming.

Therefore, you will need to check your vehicle manual or manufacturer's instructions to ensure everything is working correctly.

  2. Tools you may need:
    • Original key: If you haven't lost all of your key fobs, you'll need to prepare an original key, which will make the programming process very simple.
    • New key Fob: In addition to the original key, you also need to prepare a factory-grade blank key fob for programming and writing into the car programming system.
    • Autel key programmer: If the DIY method fails, you'll need to use a professional key programming tool. Autel offers several excellent key programmers, such as the Autel KM100, Autel IM508S, or Autel IM608 Pro II. Before purchasing, be sure to confirm that the selected programmer supports your vehicle model and function requirements.
  3. Safety tips before starting: When programming, we need to avoid losing control of the vehicle or triggering false alarms. Please follow each step carefully and pay attention to your surroundings to avoid any problems.

How to Program Nisssan Key Fob?

Method 1: DIY Guide

  • Step 1: Get into the driver’s seat of your Nissan vehicle. Make sure all the doors are closed and locked.
  • Step 2: Put the key into the ignition and turn it to “ACC.” Turn it off and take the key out of the ignition. Quickly repeat this process six times. When this is done, the emergency lights should flash twice.
  • Step 3: Put the key back in the ignition and turn it to “ACC” once again. Press and release any button on the fob. When the vehicle recognizes the new remote, the hazard lights will flash. Unlock and lock the driver’s side door. If you need to program additional key fobs, press any button on your next fob.
  • Step 4: When you are done, turn the ignition key to the “OFF” position and remove the key from the ignition.

Method 2: Use Autel Key Programm

Autel offers a variety of key programming tools. Today, we'll mainly use the Autel KM100 key programmer as an example to add a key to a 2018 Nissan Titan.

Step 1: Connect the Autel key programmer correctly

The Autel KM100 key programmer is equipped with a VCI device. Insert the VCI device into the OBD II port below the car's steering wheel to establish communication between the Autel key programmer and the car's IMMO system. If you encounter problems during this step, please refer to the solutions in the link below.

Step 2: Select the IMMO menu to enter and automatically recognize vehicle information

The Autel KM100 has an automatic vehicle information recognition function. Select the "IMMO" menu to enter, and click "Automatic VIN Recognition" in the upper left corner. Follow the on-screen instructions to turn on the hazard warning lights, open and close the doors, and turn on the ignition switch

Step 3: Check the IMMO system status and clear fault codes.

Before key programming, fault codes in the IMMO system need to be cleared. Select "IMMO Status Scan" and then perform quick DTC removal. If no fault codes are found, proceed to the next step.

Step 4: Select the "Add Key (Guide)" option below

Select the "Add Key" option below to begin key programming. This step will delete all previously learned key data, so you must reprogram the original key as well. Turn off the ignition switch, turn on the hazard lights, and open and close the driver's side door.

Place the back of the smart key against the ignition switch, press and hold the ignition switch button for 2 seconds or longer, and turn the ignition switch to the "ON" position. Turn off the ignition switch and wait 3 seconds. Press the start button once with the key that needs to be programmed to check the dashboard status. A message will indicate successful programming.

Step 5: Continue with additional key programming

Continue programming the new keys according to step four until all your keys are successfully programmed.

Step 6: Check Key Status

Open and close the car door, press the unlock/lock button on the key, start the engine and wait five seconds. Check if the vehicle can start normally and if the key buttons can unlock and lock normally. After testing, it is ready to use.

Method 3: Find an official dealer or a professional locksmith

For the latest smart key cards or Nissan models with higher security levels, using an Autel key programmer may not be possible, or it may require disassembly and reading, which would be quite complicated. Therefore, it's best not to attempt DIY or use key programming tools yourself, but rather seek help from a professional locksmith or dealer.
